In 1918, as a result of a major influenza epidemic, the orphanage Die Herberg was built by the Robertson community for orphaned and destitute children. In 2003, a five-hectare vineyard was planted on the orphanage site by the same community. All planting material, soil preparation and irrigation were donated. This blend is produced free of charge by sympathetic winemakers and sold to help the children, who are now no longer all orphans but mostly from broken families. 100% of the grapes for this blend are grown on the orphanage's land and 100% of the profits are donated to the children. Only the actual audited costs are paid, time and effort cannot be compensated.

WINEYARDS

A 20 year old vineyard, bedrock and chalk.

PRODUCTION

This classic blend was created using an ancient technique of fermenting the uncrushed berries with indigenous yeasts from the grapes. After a year's maturation in French barrels, it was bottled without refinement or filtration. It was aged in bottles for a further 12 months before being released on the market.

Located in the heart of the mountainous Robertson Valley in the Western Cape of South Africa, Springfield Estate Winery is a family-owned wine farm owned by ninth-generation descendants of French Huguenots who came to South Africa from the Loire in 1688 with bundles of vines under their arms.

The farm has been in the family since 1898 and today the Bruwer family thrives on a combination of sometimes risky winemaking techniques, traditional methods and modern technology, as well as a sense of practicality and a dogged determination, which the family has carried with them from a lifetime on the land, to handcraft wine in keeping with their motto: Made on Honour.
